Harnessing Automation and AI: 7 Key Considerations for a Successful Transformation Programme

Automation and artificial intelligence have become pivotal technologies driving change across organisations, and a thoughtful approach to adopting them can meaningfully improve operational efficiency, the customer experience and the room to innovate. These are the seven considerations that shape any transformation programme involving automation or AI.

1. Align with strategic objectives. Make sure the adoption of automation and AI aligns with the organisation's overarching goals, with clear, measurable targets for what the technology is expected to achieve, whether that is productivity, a better customer experience or lower operating cost.
2. Assess infrastructure readiness. Test whether the existing technology can support and integrate new solutions, which may mean upgrading hardware, adopting cloud services or ensuring data is stored and accessible in a way that suits the new tools.
3. Manage data quality. Data fuels these technologies, so accurate, accessible and reliable data is what lets them perform. Establish robust data management and governance to hold quality and security.
4. Address compliance and ethics. Understand and adhere to the legal, regulatory and ethical standards that apply, assessing how data is used and ensuring it complies with data-protection law and is handled responsibly.
5. Lead the change and the culture. Build a change plan for the human side of the shift, so the culture is receptive to new methods and people are trained and supported through the transition.
6. Develop skills and plan the workforce. AI and automation alter workforce dynamics, so equip teams with the relevant skills through training and hire expertise where needed, both to implement and to keep optimising the technology afterwards.
7. Measure impact and design for scale. Put mechanisms in place to measure impact against the objectives, identify the KPIs that matter, and consider scalability from the outset so solutions grow with the organisation.
